Chemical Peel

Benefits of Chemical Peels

Every day our skin undergoes the normal process of sloughing older dead skin cells. They are replaced by new cells, which ultimately, suffer the same fate. In young skin, the rate of cellular turnover is 28 days. As we age, the time needed for cells to slough off increases. Older cells stay in place longer, causing our skin to look dull and rough; impurities and moisture loss increase and fine wrinkles develop. Since peels accelerate the rate of cellular turnover, the appearance of the skin is improved.

A chemical peel involves the application of acid to burn off damaged and dead skin cells of the face, neck, décolleté and hands. A peel removes several layers of sun-damaged and aged cells to expose fresh skin with a more even surface and color. Depending on peel depth, freckles, age spots and melasma may be lightened and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles may be reduced. Acneic skin greatly benefits from peels because the acid used dissolves or softens white heads and black heads for easier extraction. Peels may be repeated every few weeks until desired results have been approached or achieved. Peel depth is determined by the degree of acidity, concentration of the peel medium, and the length of time the acid is allowed to interact with skin. Aesthetician-administered peels must be in strict accordance with the laws of the Oregon Health Licensing Agency and the peeling agent’s manufacturer protocol.

Chemical Peel
Aesthetician-administered chemical peels improve the skin in several ways: Firstly, peels destruct old, damaged or discolored cells to be replaced by healthy fresh ones. Secondly, the process of resurfacing stimulates epidermal growth and thickens the outer most protective layer of the skin. Thirdly, the repetitive nature of aesthetician-administered peels creates enough minor injury to stimulate new collagen production over time. Aestheticians are specifically trained in administering peels. They are familiar with skin anatomy and physiology, and evaluate each client for peeling suitability and contraindications.

A physician-administered deep peel is typically a one-time event to stimulate the production of new collagen in the dermis, as an inflammatory response and wound healing process. Such peels are very painful and have a long downtime. Cost, potential risks and results are directly related to the depth of a peel.

Peels have a long history of epidermal and dermal improvements, benefits already known to Cleopatra. She was fond of indulging in lengthy milk baths, a form of chemical peel.

The following skin conditions may benefit from peels:
Rough, calloused skin,
Sun damaged skin, actinic keratoses,
Pigmentation abnormalities, freckles, age spots, pregnancy mask,
Fine wrinkles and aging skin,
Acne type I and II,
Oily skin with black heads and white heads

What to expect: Before your treatment, you must see an aesthetician for evaluation. Not everyone may be peeled. A medical history will be taken and you will most likely receive a patch test. A pre-requisite to any peel is sun-abstinence. If you cannot stay out of the sun or tanning salon, or are on certain medications, peels are not for you. Your aesthetician will discuss with you the various contra-indications and will suggest the type of peel most appropriate for your skin condition. A peel may be part of a facial or a stand-alone procedure. During the procedure you will experience some stinging and reddening of the skin. Gentle peeling or flaking will begin after the 2nd day and may last up to 7 days. During that time you absolutely must not pick the skin and follow post-peel instructions. Using a sun block throughout the day (even if the sun does not shine) is mandatory.

For best results a series of peels is administered. The result of an initial peel may not be dramatic, but the effect of peels is cumulative. Some peels may be repeated every two weeks; others, once a month for a period of three months. Prices vary accordingly.
